History

In 1952, the majors of metal materials and heat treatment, casting, forging and pressing, and welding were first established in China, and later organized into the Department of Metal Materials and Technology.

In 1981, the majors of welding and metal materials and heat treatment were approved as the first batch of doctoral degree authorization points in China.

In 1983, the two majors of casting and forging and pressing were approved as doctoral degree authorization points in China.

In 1985, the Department of Metal Materials and Technology was approved to establish a post-doctoral research station.

In 1987, the three majors of metal materials and heat treatment, welding, and casting were rated as the first batch of key disciplines in China.

In 1993, the School of Materials Science and Engineering was established.

In 1996, the discipline of materials science and engineering was identified as a key construction discipline of the 211 Project at Harbin Institute of Technology.

In 1998, the special-appointed professor position was approved, and in the same year, the first-level discipline of materials science and engineering became a doctoral degree authorization point.

In 2000, the discipline of materials science and engineering was identified as a priority development discipline of the 985 Project at Harbin Institute of Technology.

In 2001, the disciplines of materials science and materials processing engineering were rated as national key secondary disciplines, and the materials processing engineering discipline ranked first in the evaluation.

In 2006, the discipline of materials science and engineering was rated as a national key first-level discipline, ranking fourth in the first-level discipline evaluation.

In 2012, the first-level discipline evaluation of materials science and engineering ranked third.

In 2017, the first-level discipline evaluation of materials science and engineering was rated as A, and it was selected as a national Double First-Class construction discipline.

In 2021, the materials science and engineering discipline ranked 22nd in the ESI ranking (among about 100,000 units worldwide) and 34th in the U.S.News ranking.

In 2022, in the new round of national first-level discipline evaluation, it was among the top-ranked disciplines (A+), and was again selected as a national Double First-Class construction discipline and a excellence - enhancing discipline.

In 2024, the QS world ranking of the materials discipline was 56th, the total ESI citations of the discipline ranked 13th in the world (entering the top 1‱), and it ranked 30th in the U.S.News ranking.

In 2025, the QS world ranking of the materials discipline was 46th, the total ESI citations of the discipline ranked 11th in the world (maintaining the top 1‱), and it ranked 24th in the U.S.News ranking.
