Based on the original National Key Laboratory for Space Environment Material Behavior and Evaluation Technology at Harbin Institute of Technology, and with comprehensive involvement in the national major science and technology infrastructure—the Space Environment Ground Simulation Facility, the laboratory was reorganized and approved as the State Key Laboratory of Space Environment and Material Interactions in 2022. It was established in response to the demands of China’s space program, primarily engaging in fundamental research on the interactions between the space environment and materials. Its main missions include providing the fundamental theories and related technologies required for reliability evaluation and lifespan assessment of materials and components used in spacecraft during their in-orbit service, researching new space materials and protection technologies, and cultivating high-level talent.
Its primary research directions include—fundamental theories of space environment-material interactions; space environment effect simulation equivalence criteria, accelerated testing principles, damage theory, performance evolution theory, on-orbit lifespan prediction theory, and protection theory; key technologies for space material effect evaluation; new materials and protection technologies for spacecraft; and the application of cryogenic, vacuum, and irradiation technologies in the broader economy.
The laboratory is equipped with various ground-based simulation facilities for space environment effects, including—a Comprehensive Space Material Irradiation Simulation System, a Space Material Positive Ion Irradiation Simulation System, a Space Material Vacuum Thermal Cycling Simulation System, a Space Material Vacuum Cryogenic Friction and Wear System, a Space Atomic Oxygen Effect Simulation System, a Space Debris High-Speed Impact Simulation System, a Space Dust High-Speed Impact Simulation System, a Space Material Vacuum Outgassing Test Apparatus, a Vacuum/Cryogenic Hydraulic Servo MTS Testing Machine, a Precision Multi-Function Cryogenic Static Load Material Testing Machine, a Material Vacuum/Cryogenic Tension-Compression Fatigue Testing Machine, and a Material Cryogenic Thermal Expansion Coefficient Measurement Apparatus.
