The Department of Optoelectronic Information Science at Harbin Institute of Technology originated from the Department of Information Materials and Technology, which was established under the leadership of Academician Zhao Liancheng, the first dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering. In January 2009, the secondary discipline doctoral program “Information Functional Materials and Devices” was approved by the Academic Degrees Office of the State Council. In July 2010, the undergraduate program Optoelectronic Materials and Devices was approved by the Ministry of Education, and student enrollment began in 2011. In 2014, the department was renamed as the Department of Optoelectronic Information Science. In 2015, upon approval by the university and filing with the Ministry of Education, the secondary discipline Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering was established. In 2021, the undergraduate program Optoelectronic Information Materials and Devices was approved by the Ministry of Education. Currently, the Department of Optoelectronic Information Science can enroll undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students in the field of optoelectronic information materials and devices, possesses the authority to confer bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, and operates postdoctoral research station.
The department boasts a strong faculty with a well-balanced age and knowledge structure, featuring a teaching and research team rich in innovative spirit and practical experience. This includes: 1 academician, 6 full professors (2 part-time) serving as doctoral supervisors. It is equipped with two molecular beam epitaxy systems from France's Riber Company, along with a suite of internationally advanced facilities for the design, fabrication, characterization, and testing of optoelectronic information materials and quantum devices, exceeding 32.6 million yuan. Over the past decade, the department has primarily focused on research in optoelectronic information materials and quantum devices, with key research areas including luminescent thin-film materials and quantum devices, optoelectronic conversion materials and quantum devices, specialty optical fibers and devices, information storage materials and devices, organic fluorescent materials, and molecular fluorescence probes. The department has led over 30 major projects, including National 863 Program, 973 Program, and National Key R&D Programs, securing more than 40 million yuan in research funding. It has been awarded 1 second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 8 provincial/ministerial-level scientific and technological honors, and holds over 100 authorized patents. Additionally, faculty members have published more than 800 research papers and 10 monographs.
