The Materials Physics program was established in March 2002, based on the discipline of Materials Physics and Chemistry. Its predecessor was the Metal Physics master’s program, approved in 1988. In 1998, it was authorized to grant doctoral degrees in Materials Physics and Chemistry. In 2002, it was designated as a key discipline by the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. As one of the first key disciplines supported under the national “211 Project” and “985 Project,” it was selected as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program in 2020 and accredited by the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association in 2023. The program is authorized to confer both master’s and doctoral degrees and hosts a postdoctoral research station.

The Department of Materials Physics and Chemistry boasts a strong and well-structured faculty team with a high proportion of young talents and outstanding teaching and research capabilities. The department has 24 faculty members, including 12 professors, 16 doctoral supervisors, and 10 associate professors or associate research fellows. All faculty members hold doctoral degrees, and 90% have studied abroad for more than one year. The department includes 1 national-level high-end talent, 3 recipients of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund, 2 national-level young talents, 6 members of the Cross/New Century Talent Program, 3 recipients of the Heilongjiang Provincial Distinguished Young Scholars Fund, and 1 recipient of the Heilongjiang Provincial Excellent Young Scholars Fund.

The Materials Physics program has achieved first-class research outcomes in the field of advanced functional materials and devices. In recent years, more than 600 papers have been published in SCI-indexed journals, including over 80 papers in top international journals such as Science, Chemical Reviews, Advanced Materials, and Acta Materialia, with more than 23,000 citations. The program has received one Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, one Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award, one Fourth Prize of the National Natural Science Award, and over ten provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards.

The Materials Physics program focuses on the design, fabrication, characterization, and application of advanced functional materials. Centered on these areas, the program integrates talent cultivation and scientific research, aligning with international scientific frontiers and the major needs of national economic development. It has established numerous important research directions, including new energy materials and devices, smart materials, thermoelectric materials and devices, shape memory materials, solid-state phase transition refrigeration, novel functional materials, water electrolysis hydrogen production technology, gene-editing delivery systems, graphene-based super composites, ultra-conductive copper wires, lithium batteries and supercapacitors, IoT-enabled intelligent sensors, radiotherapy-sensitizing nanomaterials, solar cell materials and devices, and biomimetic metal matrix composites.

Over the years, the program has trained more than 300 high-level professionals for China’s advanced functional materials, electronic information, and related industries, earning high recognition from employers.
