Based on national strategic needs and aiming at the international academic forefront, the State Key Laboratory of Precision Hot Forming was established by leveraging the original National Key Laboratory of Metal Precision Hot Processing at Harbin Institute of Technology, in collaboration with Capital Aerospace Machinery Company of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and the No. 52 Research Institute of China North Industries Group.
The laboratory is established upon the discipline of Materials Science and Engineering. Upholding the university motto “Being strict in qualifications for graduates; making every endeavor in educating students” and laboratory’s philosophy of “Cohesive Thermal Efforts, Masterful Craftsmanship,” it cultivates over 150 master students and 50 doctoral students annually, a number that ranks among the top in comparable domestic institutions. To date, it has educated nearly ten thousand graduates, including a significant number of high-caliber, innovative talents in materials processing—such as national-level high-level experts, the Chair of the Plasticity Engineering Society, and recipients of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize, the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, the National Award for Innovation and Advancement, and the Distinguished Engineer Award. Furthermore, the laboratory has supplied more than 150 chief engineers to various enterprises. It has firmly established itself as a premier hub for talent aggregation and a renowned research laboratory for research in the field of materials processing.
Guided by the development trends of Materials Science and Engineering and leveraging its own distinctive strengths, the laboratory has established four interdisciplinary and well-defined research directions—High-Performance Precision Solidification Forming, Integrated Precision Plastic Forming, Precision Control of Complex Component Geometry and Properties, and Numerical Simulation and Intelligentization of Hot Forming. For many years, as China’s largest comprehensive research platform for advanced hot processing technology, the laboratory has developed integrated technology encompassing theory, process, and equipment. It has played an indispensable role in enhancing the production of national equipment and the advancement of advanced manufacturing technologies, providing robust support for major national projects and the development and production of critical equipment.
