Established in 2015 with the approval of the National Development and Reform Commission, the laboratory is primarily based at Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). Through years of development, it has evolved into a high-level platform led by HIT in collaboration with Qiqihar Xiangke New Materials Co., Ltd. Leveraging HIT’s interdisciplinary strengths in materials science, chemical engineering, civil engineering, environmental science, transportation, mechanical engineering, electronics, and automation, the laboratory has established four key research directions-Lightweight Structural Composites, Special Functional Composites, Integrated Structural-Functional Composites, and Composite Material Application Support Technologies and Equipment.

The laboratory operates on an industry-university-research collaboration model, focusing on common challenges and technical bottlenecks in the field of metal matrix composites. By pooling and coordinating resources from partner organizations under unified management, it has effectively integrated scientific research, technological development, engineering, and industrialization. This ensures strong applicability of innovations, short production cycles, and rapid returns, leading to highly beneficial outcomes. Since its approval, the laboratory has developed 13 key proprietary technologies, all applied in practice. Accomplishments include filing over 130 national invention patents, 3 PCT patents, publishing more than 200 SCI-indexed papers, and authoring 7 books. It has produced a number of high-impact technologies, earning 1 National Science and Technology Award for “Metallurgical Mechanisms and Microstructure-Property Control in Special Welding,” 2 National Defense Awards for “Key Technology and Application of Microstructure Stability Design for SiC/Al Composites” and “Carbon-Based Dissipative Thermal Protection Composites,” and 3 Ministerial and Provincial-level Awards for projects including “Microstructure Design of Lightweight Heat-Resistant Titanium Matrix Composites” and “Key Fundamental Research on Lightweight High-Performance Magnesium Matrix Composites.” These achievements have solidified the laboratory’s role as a leader in guiding China’s technological direction in metal matrix composites.
