To guide students in developing a sound career perspective, stimulate their initiative in academic and career planning, and foster innovative thinking and research enthusiasm among faculty and students, the School of Materials Science and Engineering hosted the Distinguished Scholar Lecture Series – Session 29 & MSE Forum – Session 29 on June 26, 2026, at 9:30 AM in Room 220 of the Materials Science Building.
The forum featured a distinguished invited speaker, Professor Qingzhen Huang, from the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). Professor Huang is a globally recognized expert in neutron diffraction and magnetic structure analysis. He served for over three decades at the NIST Center for Neutron Research in the United States, has authored over 460 high-impact publications, and has received numerous international prestigious awards.
In his presentation, Professor Huang systematically elucidated the three unique advantages of neutron scattering. Drawing on case studies in superconductors, energy storage materials, and magnetic materials, he compared neutron scattering with X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction techniques, highlighting the limitations of the latter in certain characterization contexts. He demonstrated the distinctive value of neutron scattering in light-atom identification, magnetic structure characterization, and non-destructive in-situ analysis of bulk engineering components. His talk provided the audience with novel insights for fundamental mechanistic studies and innovative pathways for advanced materials design.
This lecture significantly broadened the academic horizons of faculty and students alike. It also offered a valuable career planning perspective for those interested in pursuing further studies or professional careers in this field, enabling participants to stay abreast of cutting-edge scientific developments and to grasp emerging opportunities within the discipline.
