To stimulate innovative thinking and research enthusiasm among faculty and students, the School of Materials Science and Engineering hosted the MSE Forum – Session 28 & Materials Journey International Forum – Session 5 on the afternoon of May 30 at Room 220 of the Materials Science Building. Professor Liu Zihang, Associate Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Ms. Song Xinyi, Deputy Party Secretary of the School, along with faculty members and students from related disciplines, attended the event.

The forum featured a distinguished invited speaker, Professor Yang Tao from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. Professor Yang is a recipient of the Research Grants Council (RGC) Early Career Award (ECS) in Hong Kong, and has long been engaged in research on alloy design, microstructural regulation, and manufacturing technologies for advanced metallic materials.

Under the title Innovative Design and Advanced Manufacturing of Novel High-Performance Multi-Principal-Element Intermetallic Compounds, Professor Yang focused on cutting-edge research frontiers, with particular emphasis on chemically complex intermetallic compounds as an emerging class of structural metallic materials. He systematically elaborated on the innovative design principles, advanced manufacturing strategies, and future development directions of these compounds, addressing multiple key aspects including ordered superlattice structures, multi-element synergistic alloying, and grain-boundary nano-disordering. In addition, Professor Yang shared valuable insights regarding postgraduate application processes at Hong Kong institutions and the academic research environment overseas, offering students practical guidance to broaden their international perspectives and enhance their global academic engagement.

During the interactive session, faculty and students actively posed questions, which Professor Yang addressed with thorough and professional responses, fostering a vibrant and intellectually stimulating academic atmosphere. Subsequently, Ms. Song Xinyi, Deputy Party Secretary of the School, presented Professor Yang with the MSE Forum commemorative certificate on behalf of the School, while Professor Liu Zihang, Associate Dean of the School, presented Professor Yang with the certificate of appointment as an Adjunct Doctoral Supervisor.

This lecture significantly broadened the academic horizons of the attending students and deepened their understanding of the applications of multi-principal-element intermetallic compounds. Furthermore, it cultivated a conducive environment for academic exchange, provided direction for innovation and entrepreneurship, and expanded the international perspectives of all participants.
